Margaret River Machine Quilting Open Studio

My friend Maureen Munro from Margaret River Machine Quilting has generously shared her fabulous studio with me for the period of the Margaret River Region Open Studios. We have had so many visitors over the first weekend of the event, met some lovely people who braved the rain are all so enthusiastic about being able to go out and about visiting studios, meeting artists and admiring (and purchasing) our work.

I am counting my experience today as a studio visit as I was able to watch Maureen prepare and use her huge long arm quilting machine to quilt a quilt.

first step - attaching the quilt "top" to the machine

sorting the three layers of the quilt and tensioning them for quilting

For an all over pattern Maureen has "fred" to assist her - she has to be present to ensure that fred doesn't have any hiccups - but he is able to control some robots to operate the machine. Her is Maureen telling Fred what to do

Over the course of today, with lots of people watching Fred directed the machine to stitch this lovely pattern over the whole of the quilt - attaching all three layers together

A fascinating process to watch and a whole lot more complicated than you would imagine.  Maureen completes her beautiful photographic art quilts using the same machine but for those quilts she takes full control of the quilting machine and lets Fred have a rest.

Margaret River Machine Quilting Studio open 11th – 27th April 2015 each day 10 – 4
